State business formation data
Every state page tracks the same official series: monthly business applications from the U.S. Census Bureau's Business Formation Statistics. You get 24 months of applications charted, the change against the prior 12 months, the share of applications likely to become employer businesses, and the state's LLC filing fee next to the data.
The Business Formation Index reports the national picture each month, and applications by state ranks all 50 states and the District of Columbia by count and by resident population. The state pages below carry the local detail.

How these figures are made
Application counts are not business formations: an application is a request for an EIN that signals business intent, and only some become active companies. The methodology page documents every series, window, and limitation we publish.
